"If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them." -- Phil Pastoret

Our Labrador puppies are bred to give you the best possible Labrador pup that money can buy. If you want a hunt or field test dog, hunter/companion dog, obedience, agility, search and rescue dog, that can be your special friend and companion, a Deep Run puppy will be just right for you.

Read our commentary about responsible breeding

Our puppies are bred to provide you with a pup free of genetic defects, pleasing in appearance, and intelligent with a good attitude for learning. To the best of our knowledge, our breeding stock is free of common hereditary defects such as hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, central retinal atrophy, cataracts, and thyroid disease as well as Exercise Induced Collapse, Centronuclear Myopathy, Retinal Dysplasia and Oculoskeletal Dysplasia.

When genetic tests are available for hereditary diseases, we usually have our dogs tested by an approved laboratory.

DDC Veterinary: DNA Services for Animals- Offers DNA tests for canine and equine species. Services include parentage, DNA genotyping, DNA banking, disease screening, and coat color prediction.

We now know that some of these diseases, previously perceived as hereditary, are influenced more by rearing, feeding, and neutering programs (See article Study Shines Spotlight On Neutering) than previously thought. We use the most current guidelines for nutrition and environment to give our pups the best possible start. We provide you with essential information on nutrition, body scoring and health care so you can take over when you get your puppy to provide an optimum environment.

We have been breeding Labradors for twenty years at this location, over 40 years in all and have faith in our breeding program, because it is backed by experience, education, and application.

"May we always have a young one full of promise to admit us to those places of wonderment only permissible while in the company of a Labrador" - Gene Hill from the epilogue of Richard's History of the Labrador.

Deep Run Southern Hospitality (Howdy) is a chocolate factored black male that we are happy to have here as one of our Home Team. Howdy's call name is after his sire, FC Watermark's Texas Welcome MH, an exceptional dog bred and campaigned by Mary Tatum DVM of Watermark Retrievers in Texas. Our Howdy's dam is a combination of Classic Conformation lines (uncle CH Simerdown's Dr Pepper won the LRC National) and Field Trial and NAHRA title holders. Great great grandmother GMHR Trieven Thunder Annie was the first ever NAHRA MAster Hunting Retriever, owned and handled by Jack.

Hatter is an exceptional marker and handles well on blinds. He went 4 for 4 in Junior and Senior, and completed his Master Hunter Title in the spring of 2014. In the fall of 2014 he completed his Upland Senior and Master Hunting titles, becoming the first chocolate to achieve two Master Hunter Titles in both retrieving and upland venues.

He is 85 pounds, a very handsome dog, medium chocolate in color with a classic Labrador head and well proportioned build. His sire, GMHR Deep Run After Six MH (Buddy) was my personal dog, one of the truly exceptional dogs I have had the privilege to own, train, and handle, as was Buddy's father GMHRCH Six O'Clock Scholar, MH before him. Hatter's mother is a beautiful conformation dog, carrying on the lines of multiple Best in Specialty Winner, CH/Can/Int CH Tabatha's Rollick at Carrowby, CD, JH, and her sire Am/UKC CH Deep Run Wind and Smoke, JH, WCX. Hatter is a talented, intelligent, and kind dog. He has a terrific sense of humor and is always delighting us with some stunt or other. When he is not trying to use the walkie talkie or use the phone, he is trying to steal my hat or gloves.

HIs puppies are proving to be as handsome, intelligent and trainable as he is.

Hatter is OFA Hips Good, Elbows Normal, EIC and CNM Clear, OFA Cardiac, Full Dentition, Patellas Normal, OFA Eyes Clear.

pancho
Pancho
(click for large picture)
Pancho is one of our most exciting young American Field dogs. He completed his Master title with a minimum number of trials and has been a consistent qualifier at the Master level since. Additionally,he received a Qualifying placement last fall.
He is a sweet and gentle dog, just like his dad, GMHRCH Deep Run Desperado MH (Hombre), he is cool and collected in the house and kennel but a fireball in the field.
Pancho got his name when we were eating out in a Mexican restaurant one evening. We loved his beautiful dark gold color, just like his sire, Hombre. There was large sign on the wall "Follow me to Gold and Glory", Pancho Villa. He became Pancho on the spot. Pancho and his littermate Deep Run Gypsy Gold are the product of one of Hombre's very last litters. Hombre was bred to an Elvis daughter, Deep Run Tutti Frutti, SH to produce these two spectacular young dogs.
Pancho qualified in enough consecutive Master events in 2014 to earn his Master Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award this Spring.
Pancho is OFA Good, OFA ELbows, OFA Cardiac, OFA Patellas, EIC and CNM Clear by Parentage, 2012 CERF.
